3 Self-Confidence Myths That Cause Women to Have Low Self-Esteem

By Nukhba Khan

We all want to feel confident.

We all want to be more confident.

But what is confidence?

When we say, 'I want to be more confident, what it really means is that you want to believe in yourself and live life without any self-doubt and fear.

When you speak, you speak with authority because you believe in yourself, and you believe that what you have to say is important and needs to be said.

You can make decisions without worrying or second-guessing yourself.

And that you don't need or rely on external validation.

CONFIDENCE AT THE CORE IS BELIEVING IN YOURSELF. It is the ability to trust your judgment and capabilities to face challenges or hurdles that come your way.

So that is what confidence is. Now let's talk about what confidence is not.

Here are the 3 big confidence myths that people believe and which can actually kill your confidence and simultaneously your self-esteem

MYTH #1: You have to be successful to be confident.

You have to be successful to be confident. Life Transformation Coach. Mindset Mentor. Work-Life Balance. Confidence.

The common belief is that you have to be successful first, and then you can feel confident.  You have to be perfect at everything you do, and only then you'll be able to be confident and believe in yourself. It's like you need proof to 'allow yourself to feel confident. Absolutely not.

It’s the opposite.

Confidence Building Rule #1

Confidence brings success. Success might boost confidence, but it does not build it.

  • Confident people believe in themselves to come up with solutions. They have a can-do attitude to be successful.

  • Confident people are bold enough to ask for help to improve their chances of success.

  • Confident people stretch their limits because they know their success lies outside their comfort zone.

IT IS CRITICAL FIRST TO BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE, AND THEN SUCCESS WILL FOLLOW.

MYTH #2: If You Are Confident, You Feel 100% Confident All the Time

If you are confident, you feel 100% confident all the time. Life Transformation Coach. Mindset Mentor. Work-Life Balance.

Again absolutely not.

Yes, confident people have more days where they feel they can take on the world. Still, they also have days when self-doubt and uncertainty kick in, especially when stepping outside their comfort zone. Confidence is not always there. YOUR LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE YOU FEEL VARIES THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE.

Hence, confidence needs to be constantly built, boosted, and strengthened throughout your life. It's not like once you have it, you can sit back and kick up your feet and relax.

Confidence Building Rule #2

You have to keep working on your confidence to be confident. Especially when you are put in new experiences, and we all know, pushing your comfort zone is where your personal growth and development lies.

MYTH #3: Thinking That Failure, Mistakes, and Criticism Will Destroy Your Confidence.

Failure, mistakes and criticism will destroy your confidence. Life Transformation Coach. Mindset Mentor. Work-Life Balance. Confidence.

Well, only if you allow it.

Yes, it might hurt your confidence, but it is in your control how you handle criticism and failure at the end of the day.  Look at it as an opportunity to learn and grow, and tell yourself I've got this. It will actually boost your confidence in the long run because you handled and managed a setback.

SELF-CONFIDENCE BUILDING RULE #3

It is okay not to know everything. Making mistakes can actually help you learn and grow; IT IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD CONFIDENCE.

Confidence Building Tip

Confidence has so many benefits.

When you have confidence, you have:

  • A greater sense of self-worth

  • Freedom from self-doubt, fear, and anxiety

  • More energy and motivation.

The benefits are great. Right!?

And the negative impacts of the lack of confidence are huge as well.

When you lack confidence:

  • You always doubt your abilities and talents

  • It causes stress and anxiety,

  • The stress zaps your energy, your motivation …

  • You always worry about what others think about you or worry about how much better they are doing.

  • It robs you of the positive energy you need to live a good and happy life.

So then why do people stay stuck and not work on their confidence?

The answer is really simple.

Confidence is a skill, and like any other skill, it needs to be built, refined, polished. And even though a lot of people desire to be more confident, they don't end up taking any action to build their confidence.

You need to put in the work. You have to make an effort, take action, and be committed to doing whatever it takes to master the confidence skill.

One of the easiest ways to start building your confidence is to practice repeating daily affirmations that boost your confidence. Here are a couple of examples of positive affirmations to help you get started.

  1. I love who I am inside and out. And I love myself more and more because I keep learning, growing, and pushing myself to become a better, more confident version of myself.

  2. I trust myself to do my best, and I am not afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes help me to learn and grow to be even stronger and more confident in life.

Affirmations are a powerful way to counter-argue the negative voices in your head that damage your confidence.

Having these affirmations on hand and in your head is the best way to start believing in yourself and show up more confidently in life.
